The short answer
Walk out and take the metro. Municipio station is 300 metres from the ship, and Line 1 reaches Napoli Centrale in three stops. Piazza del Plebiscito is fifteen minutes on foot, the historic centre thirty. You do not need a taxi, a shuttle or an excursion coach to see Naples — and for Pompeii, the metro plus a train gets you there in under an hour.

Metro Municipio
The detail that changes the day, and almost nobody knows it. A cruise passenger with a day in port does not need a taxi, a shuttle or an excursion coach to move around Naples.
Piazza del Plebiscito
The Royal Palace, the Galleria Umberto and the Teatro San Carlo are all in the same short walk from the terminal.
Historic centre and Napoli Centrale
The Centro Antico, Spaccanapoli and San Gregorio Armeno are a walk away — or take Line 1 from Municipio to Garibaldi.
Pompeii, under your own steam
Reach Napoli Centrale, take a train to Pompeii, and the archaeological park is 15 minutes' walk from the station. But check the season — see below.
Capodichino airport
The airport shuttle makes one stop only, at Napoli Centrale, before the cruise terminal. There is no metro station at the airport.
Pompeii: the closing time decides the day, not the journey
Getting there is easy — metro or walk to Napoli Centrale, train to Pompeii in about 30 minutes, then 15 minutes on foot to the archaeological park. What catches people out is the season.
From 15 October to 15 March the site opens at 09:00, LAST ADMISSION IS 15:30, and it closes at 17:00. For a ship in port until early evening that deadline is the binding constraint, not the travel time. Work backwards from 15:30, not from closing time. In summer the hours are far longer and an afternoon visit is comfortable.
Getting to the port, and getting away
- From Capodichino airport: about 7 km, roughly half an hour by taxi or bus. The airport shuttle runs about every 15 minutes and makes one stop only, at Napoli Centrale, before the cruise terminal. There is no metro station at the airport — do not go looking for one.
- By car: the port entrance is on via Marina, the coast road, well signposted from the city and from outside. Parking at the Stazione Marittima, opposite the terminal, runs to about €90 for eight days.
- Port gates: Varco Immacolatella and Varco Autostrade are open 24 hours; Varco Pisacane 07:00–21:00; Varco Carmine is pedestrian and opens on working days only, 07:00–09:30 and 17:00–18:30.
One thing to check before you collect a hire car
The cruise terminal sits inside the historic centre, where Naples has at least ten separate restricted zones with different hours — and one that runs only at night, 19:00 to 07:00. On foot this is entirely irrelevant. It becomes decisive the moment a car is involved. If you are picking one up in Naples, read the city's zones first.

Both are feasible, and the difference is time. Naples itself needs no planning: the metro is 300 metres away and everything in the centre is within a short walk or three stops. Pompeii is a round trip of at least three hours including the site, and in winter the 15:30 last admission may not fit a ship's schedule at all. If the ship leaves early or you are in port between October and March, the city is the safer choice.
