What the €55 covers — and where it applies
The flat rate is set by Rome's municipal taxi regulation and applies to official licensed taxis on the route between Fiumicino airport and destinations inside the Aurelian Walls — which is the historic center where the vast majority of visitor hotels sit: Termini, the Trevi and Pantheon area, Piazza Navona, Campo de' Fiori, Trastevere, the Colosseum and Monti.

- Both directions: the same €55 applies going back to the airport from the center.
- Hotel outside the walls? The meter applies instead — ask before departing: "tariffa fissa o tassametro?". For destinations inside Rome's ring road (GRA) but beyond the walls, the metered fare from FCO is capped at €80.
- Ciampino (CIA): €40 flat to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls, about 30 minutes. Same rules, lower fare.

It is also the strongest argument for the fixed airport fare, where traffic costs you nothing.
Two discounts almost no visitor knows about
15% off the metered fare for women travelling alone between 22:00 and 06:00. And 10% for direct journeys to Rome's public hospitals, for passengers over 70 or holding a European disability badge, and — unexpectedly — for young people leaving nightclubs on Friday and Saturday nights, where the venue has an agreement in place. The council notes that the 10% awaits an implementing measure.
Neither discount applies to fixed airport or port fares, nor to minimum fares, and they cannot be combined. Ask for it: “lo sconto del quindici per cento, per favore”.
How to tell a real Rome taxi
Official cabs are white, with TAXI on the roof, and they carry the city crest and the licence number on the front doors and inside on the rear left door. Check the meter is switched on before setting off, and always ask for the receipt.
Where the ranks are: at Fiumicino, outside the terminal exits for both domestic and international arrivals. At Ciampino, in the square in front of the airport. Journey times: Fiumicino to inside the Aurelian Walls takes roughly 40–50 minutes, Ciampino about 30.
To book one rather than queue, the city runs its own service: call 060609 or use the CHIAMA TAXI app. There is a €5.00 call-out supplement, and it works in a specific order: an automatic system detects the address, transfers the call to the nearest rank, then to registered drivers in queue order, and finally to the nearest free registered taxi in circulation. Your mobile number and the driver's are shared with each other, so if something goes wrong a direct call is always possible — which is also why you are asked for the number when registering.
Your 60-second playbook at FCO
- Ignore anyone offering a "taxi" inside the terminal — official drivers don't recruit at arrivals.
- Follow the TAXI signs to the official rank outside. Official Rome cabs are white, with a Comune di Roma crest, a roof sign and a license number on the door.
- State your destination and confirm the magic words: "tariffa fissa — cinquantacinque". A nod is all you need.
- Card payment is your right — Rome taxis must accept cards. "Machine broken" is a classic; insist, or have exact cash.
- Ask for the receipt (ricevuta) if anything felt off — the license number on it is your complaint ticket.
The classic tricks, so you can smile past them
- The terminal greeter: friendly, holds a phone, "taxi for you?" — that's an unlicensed driver at triple price. Walk on.
- "The flat rate doesn't apply today": it applies every day. Smile and repeat cinquantacinque.
- Per-person pricing: the €55 is per car, never per passenger.
- The scenic meter: on a flat-rate ride the meter is irrelevant — whatever it displays, you owe €55.
- Black-sedan "deals": a legitimate private car (NCC) is fine if pre-booked with a written fixed quote — never negotiated on the spot at arrivals.
Alternatives, honestly ranked
- Leonardo Express train — about €14, 32 minutes, nonstop to Roma Termini every 15 minutes. The winner for one or two travelers with manageable bags, especially near Termini.
- Regional FL1 train — cheaper still, serves Trastevere and Ostiense (not Termini); handy if your hotel is on that side.
- Pre-booked NCC private car — fixed written quote, driver with a name sign; the calm choice for late-night landings or 5–6 people. Book ahead, never at the curb.
- The taxi wins when you're three or four with luggage headed to the centro storico: €55 split beats four train tickets — door to door, no stairs.

Four things about it that hardly anyone mentions, and they change the arithmetic:

So a couple with two children under twelve travels for €28 in total, not €56. Against a €55 taxi that is a real difference — though the taxi still wins door-to-door if your hotel is nowhere near Termini.
Travelling as a group of four? The Minigruppi fare sells four tickets in one transaction for €40 instead of €56. That brings the train below the taxi even before you count the walk from Termini.

Two warnings about the train
Metrebus tickets are NOT valid on the Leonardo Express. A Roma 24h or 72h pass does not cover it, and neither does the BIT. This catches people who assume their city ticket works everywhere.
And if you buy the ten-journey carnet (€115) in paper form, it is not a ticket: you must convert the counterfoil into single tickets at a ticket office or machine before each journey, and validate each one. A single journey is then valid for 90 minutes from validation.
